'" THE WAVY WATERS IN THE PICTURE ARE SYMBOLIC OF KARMA, THE LOTUS , OF BHAKTI, AND THE RISING-SUN, OF JNANA. THE ENCIRCLING SERPENT IS INDICATIVE OF YOGA AND AWAKENED KUNDALINI SHAKTI, WHILE THE SWAN IN THE PICTURE STANDS FOR PARATMAN. THEREFORE , THE IDEA OF THE PICTURE IS THAT BY THE UNION OF KARMA,JNANA,BHAKTI AND YOGA, THE VISION OF THE PARAMATMAN IS OBTAINED"'
The idea of personal salvation, deliverance from the shackles of karma has been the preoccupation of most Indian religions until the birth of the Buddha. The great heart of the Buddha yearned for the removal of the miseries of all beings. Inspired by his compassion Buddhist missions were engaged in the spread of education and health. Questions like the nature and destiny of the soul , God etc. were relegated to the background. In course of time a nihilism gained ground , which did not satisfy man's innate spiritual needs. Sri Ramakrishna and Vivekananda taught that seeking one's own salvation and alleviating the miseries of the world are not pursuits in different directions. There is only one being that appears as the self, God , and nature. They were reaffirming the ancient wisdom of Vedanta. If this truth is accepted it follows that when one helps the world one helps oneself. Your personal salvation is inextricably linked with the salvation of the world. Vivekananda defined religion as the manifestation of divinity already in man. All efforts to manifest one's own divinity fall within the scope of religion; so does helping others towards the goal. All religions in various degrees embody the Vedantic truth of the unity of all being and the essential divinity of man . So the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission are universal in scope .
