History Of Morgan Memorial Hospital
** History **
The history of Morgan Memorial Hospital is a rich one. It is a story of
vision and commitment. More importantly, it is a story of touching
people's lives.
It began in August of 1957, when the citizens of Morgan County clearly stated they were in favor of the construction of a county hospital under the provisions of the Hill-Burton Act. Funds were raised through bonds purchased by members of the community. In 1960, the 26-bed hospital opened its doors with Dr. L. K. Lewis admitting the first
patient.
Since the first cornerstone was laid more than 40 years ago, Morgan
Memorial Hospital has continuously expanded to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community. The timeline below provides a brief overview of projects that have allowed us to increase our patient
services.
1989 - Completion of a major renovation and expansion project creating a new business office, lobby, lab and ER overflow area.
1997 - Broke ground on the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), a skilled nursing unit.
May 15, 1998 - TCU opened for patient use.
1998 - Imaging Center opened for patient use.
December, 1999 - Obtained Critical Access Hospital status. Morgan Memorial was the 6th hospital in the state to obtain such designation.
June, 2004 - Started a behavioral health program to help address mental health needs of senior population. Relocated program as the Senior Life Enrichment Center in 2006 to a larger location to meet the growing patient population.
November, 2004 - Expanded pharmacy and ultrasound capabilities by constructing a separate storage facility for medical records and supplies.
October, 2006 - Opened an Outpatient Therapy Center to provide expanded physical, occupational and speech therapy services with more room for patient care.
February, 2007 - Remodeled business office to allow for increased patient privacy during registration.
Hospital administration, board members and county leadership are currently evaluating options to replace the current facility. This is an exciting time for us as we make plans to not only better serve our current citizens but also those to come!
