Weiss Memorial Hospital, affiliated with the University of Chicago Medical Center, is a Joint Commission-accredited, 236-bed healthcare facility providing a full range of medical services to its patients. Weiss has more than 400 physicians in 23 medical specialties, and more than 1,000 employees who speak more than two dozen languages. Weiss is a private, for-profit hospital located at 4646 North Marine Drive in Chicago. The hospital is conveniently located and easily accessible at Wilson Avenue off Lake Shore Drive. Weiss serves a primary service area of more than 600,000 people, including neighborhoods from Lakeview and Logan Square, to Rogers Park and Skokie.

History Of Weiss Memorial Hospital

Weiss Memorial Hospital was built on part of what used to be Clarendon Beach, which remains one of the most popular beaches in the city.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for Weiss Memorial Hospital were held on March 12, 1952.
Weiss Memorial Hospital, shown here under initial construction, would be the first non-profit general community hospital to be built in Chicago in a quarter century.
A large crowd of onlookers including Jewish, Catholic and Protestant leaders joined a cornerstone ceremony for the new $3 million Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital in late October of 1952. The hospital opened the following summer.
A local newspaper heralded the coming completion of the hospital, named for the late Chicago philanthropist.
The formal dedication of Weiss Memorial Hospital was led by (from left) Dr. Herman Strauss, Dr. Alfred A. Strauss, Barnet Hodes, Mrs. Goldie Dworkin (the former Mrs. Louis A. Weiss) and Dr. Sigfried Strauss. The three Strauss brothers, through their leadership and generous financial support, were co-founders of the hospital with the Weiss family and served on the Board of Governors.
Weiss Hospital’s cornerstone was laid with some help by (from left) Mrs. Goldie Dworkin, Board of Governors member Barnet Hodes, Mr. Weiss’ grandson Richard A. Hirschman, Dr. Alfred A. Strauss and Dr. Sigfried Strauss.
Comedian Jimmy Durante (right), seen here with hospital co-founder, Dr. Alfred A. Strauss, was Weiss Hospital’s first registered inpatient.
The original Silberman Professional Residence, located behind the hospital, was opened in 1964 with 73 apartments. The building now has 13 floors and 156 apartments, some of which house Weiss staff.

On August 16, 2000, Weiss Memorial Hospital broke ground for a new two-story 45,000 square foot addition, including an expanded Emergency Department, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit and a visitor-friendly lobby and entranceway.
